Potsdamer Tanztage 2005

04 – 15 May 2005

From 4 to 15 May 2005, the state capital of Brandenburg will become a centre for contemporary dance, one of the most moving and dynamic art forms of the present day.

This year, various spaces in Schiffbauergasse - the Reithalle B, the Russenhalle, a circus tent, the former Sporthaus, the Fischhaus and the Offizze - will be transformed into dance venues. Contemporary art illustrates the thoughts, actions and feelings of a society. The Potsdam Dance Days represent a microcosm of this community - international and German artists, guests and Potsdamers. They make it possible to categorise them in an international context. The creative approaches of the artistic works allow us to shed a multifaceted light on different themes, their origins in other countries anchor us in the world. Social and artistic dialogue takes place here and everywhere.

The programme includes performances which, between abstraction and theatre, purism and multimedia, between entertainment and concept, between reality and fantasy, seek a language that gives space to dance and the reception of dance. Abou Lagraa (F), Peeping Tom (B), Martine Pisani (F), RotoZaza (GB), Zero Visibility Corp. (N), Valeria Apicela (I), Joris Camelin (F), Mata Sakka (G), Jörg Lukas Matthaei (D), Sasha Pepelyaevs Kinetic Theatre (Ru), Stephanie Maher und Sten Rudstrøm (USA), Kongo Ba Téria (Burkina Faso), Trollwerk (Potsdam).

These diverse approaches can be found in the workshops: improvisation with objects, voice training, modern dance, release and composition, performance and presence, but also physical schools such as yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi, not forgetting the classics of African dance and contact improvisation. The focus is always on activating potential, opening up possibilities to discover, try out and learn in different situations.

The Sternenzelt will be a crystallisation point for the festival: there guests will find the festival bar and space to relax, information and tickets for all events, space to talk and dance themselves. Every day from 9.30 pm, it offers a changing programme of dance performances and live music, salsa, tango, flip-books and much more.

Now almost a tradition - the Nighttalks - discussions between the audience and artists following the performances. Artistic and aesthetic approaches, techniques, images, background, the history of the creation of the pieces, biographies, political and social contexts can all be discussed here.

1st Children's Tanztage
A programme that invites children and parents to dance and watch dance with workshops, dance courses and performances. We want all children to have the opportunity to be creative in order to develop their potential. Dance is a wonderful way to develop imagination, creativity and the body at the same time. Dance is an art form that combines unrivalled diversity: the body, the personality, the group and creativity. Ludovic Fourest and Livia Patrizi lead workshops. Livia Patrizi shows her piece ‘What is dance?’, which explains in a wonderfully playful way what choreography actually is. Noelle Dalsace takes us into poetic, clownish worlds and Anja Kozik brings together young dancers, musicians and video artists in ‘oxymoron’, a fusion of break dance, ballet and modern dance.
