Potsdamer Tanztage 2017

16 – 28 May 2017

A demonstration with white posters strides through the streets of Potsdam, Indonesian women practise war dances, traditions marked by taboos and violence are questioned - this year the Potsdam Dance Days become a resonance space for protest and responsibility!

Beginning with the German premiere of "Hieronymus Bosch: the Garden of Delights" by the Compagnie Marie Chouinard, which focuses on the chaotic and anarchistic world of Hieronymus Bosch as the basis of their choreography. Fear, joy, emotions and lusts find a stage as the embodiment of man's wildest dreams. Furthermore, some productions in this programme stand out for committed art. Emblematic of this is Anne Collod's Happening, which brings a revival of Anna Halprin's 1967 art demonstration "The Blank Placard Dance" to Potsdam. The demonstrators' banners are unlabelled and, with their missing slogans, call on the spectators to complete the revolt themselves. The action aestheticises protest and turns it into a shared reflection on agitation, agitation and aggression. It also foregrounds the role of art as a reflective and subversive activity. Daina Ashbee's piece "Unrelated" impresses by addressing violence against women in the indigenous population and its impact for generations. For Ashbee, dance is a way of expressing distress, but also of healing. Ali Chahrour explores the traditions of his homeland in his pieces and in "May He Rise..." he deals with the theme of masculinity in interplay with moments of weakness and loss. The Indonesian choreographer Eko Supriyanto in turn dedicates himself to the women of Indonesia. With "Balabala", he presents a group of young women who question the social rules of their village by practising the typically male martial arts of their region. His piece becomes a tribute to modern Indonesian women and claims for itself the social impact of art.

With a focus on Canada, the Potsdam Dance Days will also be hosting five productions that provide an (inevitably partial) insight into the diversity of the Canadian dance scene and thus celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada's founding. The Compagnie Marie Chouinard is one of the country's best-known ensembles, as is the RUBBERBANDance Group with its distinctive style of hip hop and contemporary dance. Other enfants terribles such as Frédérick Gravel or Daina Ashbee are internationally appreciated for their highly sensitive and at the same time impressive pieces. As festival prologue, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage will tour the state of Brandenburg with her open-air piece "Habiter sa Mémoire", bringing dance into everyday life in a 4-hour performance for passers-by.

In addition to the performance programme, the Potsdamer Tanztage presents a wide range of concerts that invite you to extend the evening after the pieces: LINKAA, Pretty Mery k., HOPE, Aaron Ahrends, Raman Khalaf & Kaan Wafi as well as TripAdLip are some of the bands that will enliven the open-air stage of the fabrik.

Furthemore, the festival invites you to attend 33 workshops for professionals, amateurs and children, as well as artist talks to deepen the experience.
