Thick, dusty figures enter the stage, surprising and stirring in their clumsy bodies. Grotesque and comical, however, they accomplish one of the greatest dance theatre performances of the last three decades. "May B", the mythical piece by the French choreographer Maguy Marin, has been an international stage success since 1981 and is at the same time a symbol of the awakening of contemporary dance in Europe in the 1980s. "May B" opens the POTSDAM DANCE DAYS 2011 and is the perfect prelude to a dance festival that has been whirling through the genres, dance styles and diversity of the international dance scene for 21 years.
Top-class choreographers and companies have announced themselves: Gunilla Heilborn (S) reinvents Swedish folk dance, Shang-Chi Sun (Taiwan) creates a dance version for "Acts without Words" by Samuel Beckett, Kyung-Ae Ro (Korea), Frédérique Lambert (F), Daniel Abreu (E), Zero Visibility Corp. (N), Ballett Greifwald and the cult short piece programme Lucky Trimmer presents cheeky, latest works by young choreographers.
A special feature of the festival is the closeness between audience and artists. Therefore, a fixed component of the festival are the 20 workshops, which are aimed at interested amateurs and professional dancers, as well as the artists' talks, which encourage exchange between dancers, choreographers and the audience after the performances. Concerts, installations, DJs complete the programme and invite you to linger in Schiffbauergasse.
