With twelve dance performances by international and regional dance companies – including four world premieres and four German premieres – along with workshops, dance jams, and concerts, the 19th Potsdamer Tanztage will transform the Schiffbauergasse into a space of discovery, experimentation, and temptation in the realms of dance and performance, across four stages and six dance studios.
This year’s dance performances exemplify artistic perspectives and reflections on the dramatic ecological, cultural, and social upheavals of our time, rooted in both personal and collective experiences.
The “drunken forests” of Iceland’s melting permafrost regions inspired Serge Ricci to create a poignant exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. His work draws a fascinating arc between dance, visual art, and music.
Ingun Bjørnsgaard, drawing on classical antiquity, explores traditional gender roles and subtly illuminates the dynamics of power in the drama of the sexes with a touch of humor.
The Potsdam-based group Oxymoron also turns its attention to the relationship between the sexes and the apparent impossibility of understanding love.
Sara Shelton Mann, one of the most influential choreographers of the North American West Coast, joins an international group of dancers and musicians in search of the shared roots of humanity beyond cultural and social constructs. In dialogue with the metaphor of the “globalized village,” she appeals for an intercultural society of freedom and responsibility.
With high energy and almost ecstatic dynamism, the Lyon-based company Association Woo embarks on a journey to the sources of individual and collective imagination, driven eightfold by the sound of their electric guitars. In contrast, the choreographed dreamscapes of the Russian group Derevo move with precision through a timeless landscape, evoking an elusive world of childhood and youth.
John Moran also tells of memory through sound and rhythm in his musical-dance chamber play – a collage of sound and text from the microcosms of New York bars and apartments.
Martin Pisani and Martin Nachbar explore concepts and perceptions of time in a playfully intelligent way in their first joint work, profit and loss.
The duo Oleg Soulimenko and Andrei Andrianov, with a wink, compare Russian and Western European dance and performance culture in Made in Russia – a post-communist "competition of systems."
Altogether, this year's festival will feature twelve choreographers from eight countries in the performance program. Following each dance piece, a diverse and intercultural concert program will feature guests from Canada, the USA, Russia, France, and Potsdam.
In addition to performances and workshops, the 5th Children and Youth Dance Days will offer a special program of movement, play, and music for children and their parents.
