Models of participation and involvement in dance – Pathways towards the democratisation of art and society

Discussion and film presentation of the project HAMONIM Potsdam 2025

05 Jun 2026 | Potsdamer Tanztage 2026Discourse

What motivates people—often without prior experience—to embark together with strangers on the risk of an artistic process? How does artistic practice change for a choreographer when working with “non-professionals”?

With the expansion of artistic concepts, perspectives on reception and participation in artistic processes have also multiplied. Opportunities for active involvement in art are closely linked to questions of personal freedom, well-being, and civic responsibility in shaping society. Such practices are now common in museums, theatres and schools, and are also an integral part of fabrik Potsdam’s programme.

In light of current debates on the relevance and sustainability of artistic initiatives, fabrik Potsdam invites practitioners and participants from the fields of art, politics and society to engage in a shared exchange of experiences.

With:
Patricia Carolin Mai, choreographer of the project HAMONIM and director of MAI:COMPANY
Lea Schleiffenbaum, art historian, independent curator and mentor in the New Patrons programme (KSB)
Karin Kirchhoff, Programme Director of Tanzland – the Federal Cultural Foundation’s programme for touring partnerships
Dr Sarah Zalfen, Head of the Cultural Policy Unit (m.d.W.d.G.b.) at the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of Brandenburg
Members of the fabrik’s JugendTanzCompany, participants of HAMONIM Potsdam 2025, contributors from the New Patrons programme in Eisenhüttenstadt
