Provocative, radical, uncompromising: Anita Berber (1899-1928) was one of the most fascinating artists of the Weimar Republic. As a dancer, choreographer and icon of her time, she characterised modern dance with her expressive style and uncompromising physicality. She became a myth between art and excess and at the same time an early icon of feminist self-dramatisation and artistic freedom.
In the lecture performance by Martin Stiefermann and Brit Rodemund, Anita Berber’s life and work are shed new light on beyond the scandals. Accompanied by live music from pianist David Schwarz, selected reconstructed solos are performed and vividly interwoven with rare archival material and scholarly insights from dance studies. One of the key sources is the German edition published by MS Schrittmacher of Anita Berberová – A Study by choreographer Joe Jenčík from 1930 – a striking source of forgotten dance history.
