Nadia Beugré (Montpellier/Abidjan)

05 – 06 Jun 2023 | Potsdamer Tanztage 2023Dance / performance

In the working-class Abobo neighbourhood of Abidjan, Aya's quick movements earned her the nickname "La Chinoise", while Christelle's corpulence has made her "Gros Camion", a moniker she adopts with irresistible charisma. From urban African dances like coupé-décalé and roukasskass to acrobatic figures, they have appropriated a space traditionally reserved for men to assert their sexuality, own their space, and deconstruct the femininity assigned to them. Nadia Beugré recognises herself in them: Through dance, these two generations of women share their relationship to their city as well as their position as a woman in Ivorian society. She keeps the fire of these "petroleum girls" burning, which must not be allowed to fizzle out. After Quartiers Libres in 2021, Nadia Beugré is back in Potsdam with a new piece dedicated to the next generation of Ivorian women.

Afterwards on both days: talk with the artists
