“It might have been weird […] that I chose dance in a country that was coming out of civil war, destruction, death, and loss. However, dance at the time seemed to be the most revolutionary, the most provocative, and the most confrontational.” Omar Rajeh

Dance is not for us

Omar Rajeh / Maqamat (Beirut/Lyon)

25 – 26 May 2024 | Potsdamer Tanztage 2024Dance / performance

English with German surtitles.

Alone on stage, Omar Rajeh dances and reminisces about an intimate past that has slipped away, leaving behind both a fading and deceptive image – a past halted in its tracks, unable to transition into the future. His movements exude vigour, power, and sensuality, reflecting the depths of his inner reflections and his extensive experiences as an artist in Lebanon. Through his dancing body, Rajeh channels an act of defiance against oppressive structures, embodying hope in the face of adversity. Omar Rajeh has left an indelible mark in Lebanon and the Arab world. As the founder of Maqamat, dance festivals, and both live performance and virtual dance spaces, his work articulates his profound belief in the transformative power of dance on individuals and society.

Afterwards on Sun 26. May: talk with the artists

On Sat 25. May, 22:00: Concert Lua Preta at fabrikclub (Entrance free of charge)
